Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club opened its doors for a Wheelchair badminton Taster Session.
The players enjoyed playing on an adapted court which takes the whole of the forecourt area out of the game in both singles and doubles. Wheelchair badminton singles is also played on a half court.
We saw a number of players turn up on Saturday evening, including able-bodied. Initially Lorraine Brydie and Carol Bilton (Level 2 coaches) worked with the wheelchair players then gave them the opportunity to take on each other at singles. Later in the session all players, including able bodied, came together to play some doubles games. The players found this to be both competitive and fun! The coaches were on hand to give some helpful tips to improve their skills and techniques. Afterwards we all sat together in the bar for a drink and a bite to eat.
The club recently had a brand new wet room completed having received generous funding from London Marathon Charitable Trust and from other partnerships. In addition the club owns two sports wheelchairs, kindly donated by Anders Foundation Charitable Trust.
We currently have a small number of Wheelchair badminton players at the club and very much want to grow this group. We welcome all levels, including beginners.
