The Squash Club Championship finals day saw Phil Rushworth retain the open title to make it an impressive five years in a row.  Nada Elkalaawy kept the ladies title in the family after defeating her sister and last year’s winner Rawan Elkalaawy.

The whole day was a great success with excellent crowds cheering on the finalists throughout the day.  There was a new junior club champion and definitely our youngest winner of the WRFC junior title in Luke Camfield.  He played out a great match with Charlie Collett in a super spirit, which drew the loudest cheers of the day.

Charlie Collett did have his own success on the day too winning the Silver Championship, after a strong victory over Fuji Huynh.  Rob Dodds wrapped up his wonderful week winning the Gold Championship, following promotion for his beloved Newcastle United and the birth of his baby boy Thomas!

In the Bronze event Ameerah Elgarhy came through a good match with Phil Emery, winning in three games.  The Over 45 final had to be played after the finals day and this was won by David Willis following a three-game victory over Dave Timperley.

The longest and most brutal match of the day was between James Greenhead and Rob Cameron in the Over 35 event.  After putting the schedule an hour behind time, it was James Greenhead that ran out the winner 11-9 in the fifth game!!

Somehow both James and Rob soldiered on to take part in the Doubles final directly after.  James was partnering Phil Rushworth and Rob partnered David Boothroyd.  There was some very entertaining and frantic squash being played in confined spaces!  Despite two very close and well contested games it was James Greenhead and Phil Rushworth who picked up their second titles of the day.

WRFC would like to thank all the great work and support of the squash committee to make the squash championships such a success!  We would like to also thank club member Kevin Murray of iDare Sports Limited, who provided the extremely generous vouchers to our finalists, which we very much appreciate!

Finally, a huge well done to all the players that took part and made it an exciting squash championship over the two weeks!

Our next major club events for you to get involved in are the Pickleball Social Tournament (Saturday 24th June) and the Summer Graded Squash Tournament (22nd & 23rd July).
