Pickleball Social Tournament

Club News, Social News

On Saturday 24th June Wimbledon Racquets & FC hosted our first ever Pickleball Tournament. The aim of the event was to have a combined squash, badminton & gym tournament that everyone could get involved with.

This was also one of many charity events that the club are hosting throughout this year for Cancer Research UK. With QBE Insurance kindly doubling the amount raised on the day from ticket sales, we manged to raise £700.00 for Cancer Research UK. This takes our total for the year to £4,500.00 so far!

The event started with a demonstration from 4 Pickleball players who had kindly given up their time to be part of the day. Huge thanks go to Carolyn Laville who invited the Pickleball players to WR&FC and also helped out with keeping things flowing during the tournament. The event couldn’t have been possible without the kind offer from Jane McGuire who’s website lent us the paddle bats for the day.

The tournament format started with 4 groups of 5 pairs in each group.  16 pairs then qualified for Round 2. After 3 hours of fun Pickleball we got down to the final matches. Congratulations to the overall winning pair Obaid Dehlavi & Tobias Gleitz who defeated Anna Prestwich & Phil Rushworth in the final!

Third place went to Harrison Wood & John Sawyer. Every pair then played off for their final positions in an action packed day.

Everyone had a super time getting used to playing Pickleball & it was clear to see the standard of play improve as the day progressed!

The club would like to thank all the entrants who made the day such a success, Marion Eyles for running the schedule throughout the tournament & the Joint Racquets committee for pulling the whole event together.
