Congratulations to Emily Wu and Lakshan Devarajan winners of The Devlin handicapped badminton tournament at the weekend. Winners received prize money of £100 and will have their names engraved on the Devlin cup trophy and honours board A massive well done to Runners up – Marina Zabell and Mandeep Baveja who fought hard in the final. Runners up received prize money of £50.
Thanks to a grant from Wimbledon Foundation’s “Get set, Get Active” Fund, WR&FC Disability Badminton will be able to purchase new racquets which is much needed to continue the growth of disability badminton at the club and in the wider community. This week sees the start of the new sessions, specifically geared to players with a Physical disability and to Wheelchair players. This will be in addition to a specific weekly session geared to players with a Learning Disability. Wimbledon Foundation, established in 2013 is the charity arm of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and the Championships. The Foundation aims to use the resources and heritage of Wimbledon to help change people’s lives, particularly in the local area.

Some of our badminton members may remember the two visits to our club of Anders Antonsen when he participated first, at the age of just 12, in the Wimbledon U16 team tournament. It was evident then that this was a very special talent. In 2013, aged 15, he swept all before him to win the Wimbledon U19 Gold men’s singles title beating the very best of England’s players several years older then himself. Since those days he has not only added several inches to his height but developed his game to be able to compete with the very best in the world. To those who have watched his progress over the years it came as no surprise to see him contesting the Men’s Singles title at the current World Championships in Basle this weekend.
