FANTASTIC news! Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club Performance Centre is ranked joint 1st for all Performance Centres around the country. “Badminton England look at 5 different areas and in all these areas we achieved Gold standard. We are only one of two PCs to do this. This is a fantastic achievement and it is all down to the dedication and commitment to coaching at our club. Without everyone’s invaluable effort Wimbledon wouldn’t be the same. For this I want to personally thank you all.” Ben Beckman – Head of Badminton PC Tiers – 20 April 2016 (2)

The Surrey Para-badminton tournament took place on Saturday 19th March 2016. There were six women and eleven men entered into seven events. The tournament was played in the greatest of spirits with a lot of laughter and also some coaching sessions on the serve for some of Wimbledon’s junior players. At the last minute we added a Wheelchair 1/2 category and ran a combined mixed doubles event where the area of play was taxing for all players. Two umpires, Ron Wood and Colin Murray attended to make the finals even more special. Finals were played in four events. The referee was Judith Fisher with support from Bex Morrison. The Hiro Yamamoto Handicap Men’s & Ladies Doubles Tournament took place on Sunday 22nd November. Sadly, we received an entry from only one ladies doubles pair so this event had to be cancelled; however, 17 men’s doubles pairs entered with players from all grades (C, C+, B, B+ & A) taking part. The final was a closely-fought contest between Jerry Cheng & Jon Lim and Gulam Robbani & Daniel Tang; Gulam and Daniel won 21-19, 24-22. Gulam and Daniel certainly got into the Christmas spirit, wearing festive T-shirts….
Emma is a disability badminton player with huge potential. She has only just reached 10 years old and entered her first able-bodied competition, the Surrey U11B girls tournament at the weekend and was awarded the Silver medal. Emma has a SL3 classification which only requires her to play half court singles in a para-badminton event. She won her medal taking on an able-bodied player in the final on full court after winning 4/5 games in the pool stages! Emma works very hard at her fitness and technique and is a regular member of the weekly disability badminton and monthly Talent Spotting sessions at the club. Well done Emma!! We would also like to thank Lorraine Brydie who leads the disability coaching team and the rest of her team.
