The weekend of the 9th and10th September saw Wimbledon RFC hosting the annual U19 Gold badminton tournament. This event is generously sponsored by the Anders Foundation and always attracts the cream of English junior players, this year was no exception.
This year the entry was overwhelming but this event has always been considered to be an elite tournament with a limited draw taking just 30 in the Men’s Singles, 24 in the Women’s Singles and 16 pairs in the doubles events. Selecting the entries is done on grading followed by ranking and so ensures that the only very best are accepted.
Surrey players featured prominently in the finals with Will Jones winning the Mixed Doubles with his partner Asmita Chaudhari and Alexandra Oprisan contesting the Women’s Singles final.
My thanks go to the staff of the Club for their patience and hard work making the event run so smoothly and in particular to Jenny Lacey who works tirelessly as tournament secretary to organise the entries and so much more.
