Once again, WR&FC was host to one of the best team tournaments in the calendar on 22/23 July.
This year saw 11 teams from all over the country compete for the title. We had a number of new teams this year which included a team from Essex/Kent, a team from Portsmouth University, A team from Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire and a team from C&P. Wimbledon Club also had two teams entered including one B+ team. There were also a number of other teams with some excellent Wimbledon players in.
The standard of the women players this year was excellent with a number of ladies in the national top 20 doubles and singles rankings taking place.
The group stages took place on the Saturday with the top two from each group plus two best runners up going into a draw for top 8 places and the three lower teams completing a round robin. All this went according to plan in terms of seedlings with some great matches taking place in the groups.
The completion for the top four spots on Sunday was then between Super Shuttlers from Essex/Kent, who played Georgina Blands team (Mighty Pebbles)in the semi and Putney Massive (Jerry Cheng & Luke Pearce’s team) who played Cool Runnings a Leics team in the other semi.
Despite a few hangovers from Saturday nights excellent party, Super Shuttlers beat Mighty Pebbles 7-2 although the score did not reflect the closeness of the match. Putney Massive had an excellent win over Cool Runnings coming through with a 6-3 victory.
The final was an excellent match but Super Shuttlers were just too strong for Putney Massive and ran to a decisive 5-2 lead with Cool Runnings have a fantastic match with Mighty Pebbles to pip them to 3rd spot with a 5-4 win.
So great time had by all. The party on the Saturday was excellent fun with many in fancy dress and the highlight being a impromptu karaoke performance by Sam Lyle giving a very good account of himself with an Oasis anthem!
We would especially like to thanks Tracy Dineen for all her work over the last few months for putting this tournament together. Also thank you to Raj Debidin, Jimmy Sheikh, Rich Southward and Kate Cooper who all did a great job in supporting Tracy in running the event over the weekend.
