Wimbledon Squash & Badminton Club History

The Wimbledon Squash & Badminton Club was built on its current site in 1936.

The building work proceeded rapidly and the architect was able to announce that the badminton courts could be used for play by the 30th November 1936. In fact, the first county match in the new hall was arranged on Sunday 30th November when Surrey played Middlesex. Although, the hall was complete - the contractors had finished laying the maple floor only hours before the match was due to start - the lounge and changing rooms were far from finished and the players had to use the stewards house to change for the match!

Grice & Poulton drew up plans of the proposed club in July of that year by mid-September work was in progress and Wimbledon Squash & Badminton Club was formed.

The Club was officially opened on Tuesday 26th January 1937 by Lord Ebbisham with an opening ceremony and exhibition matches in both squash and badminton.

In August 1995 the new gymnasium, dance studio, reception area and shop were added to the Club to extend and improve its facilities considerably.

In December 2000 the Club refurbished the changing rooms adding saunas and the new fitness centre to the Club, in addition the Club re-branded and changed its name to Wimbledon Racquets and Fitness Club

Further modernisation to the bar area was completed in 2003.
